Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is a $10,000 State of New York World War Bonus Bond, issued in 1924 and maturing in 1943. It features raised embossed seals, cancellation holes, and handwritten signatures. The bond was transferred to William K. Vanderbilt, a prominent member of the Vanderbilt family.

Authorized by a 1924 constitutional amendment, these bonds were part of New York State’s initiative to provide financial bonuses to honorably discharged World War I veterans who were residents at the time of their enlistment. The program was a response to public pressure for veteran compensation and was funded through the issuance of high-denomination bonds like this one. William K. Vanderbilt, along with Harold S. Vanderbilt and Frederick W. Vanderbilt, served as trustees for such bonds, reflecting the family’s continued involvement in public and philanthropic affairs.

This bond certificate, printed by the American Bank Note Company, showcases intricate engravings, including the New York State seal, and is hand-signed by state officials. The presence of cancellation holes and official stamps indicates its redemption upon maturity. For collectors and historians, this bond represents a tangible connection to post-World War I American history and the state’s efforts to honor its veterans.

You will receive a certificate similar to the one shown in the photos. Each is an original issued bond from 1924, featuring unique elements such as raised seals, cancellation holes, and handwritten signatures. Condition may vary slightly, but all are authentic documents representing a piece of New York State’s financial and military history.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
