Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This listing includes 4 color variants of an original stock certificate from The Atlantic Refining Company, dated 1952. Available in orange, olive, green, and a 3-color combination, each featuring a vignette of two allegorical female figures seated on either side of a central circular medallion reading 'ATLANTIC'. The left figure holds industrial tools while the right represents commerce, surrounded by foliage. Printed by the American Bank Note Company.
This example was issued and shows cancellation with punch holes across the signature area and face, indicating it was redeemed. Shows normal signs of age with slight toning and fold lines consistent with its years. Offered as a collectible.
In 1952, Philadelphia's Atlantic Refining Company stood as one of America's most successful independent oil companies, having grown from modest beginnings in 1866 to control a refining and marketing empire stretching along the Eastern seaboard. The company was founded by Charles Lockhart and William Frew, two Pittsburgh entrepreneurs who recognized the potential of Pennsylvania crude oil.
By the 1950s, under president Frederick Griffith, Atlantic operated major refineries in Philadelphia and Point Breeze, supplying its distinctive red, white, and blue Atlantic stations from Maine to Florida. The company's innovations included early adoption of catalytic cracking technology and the development of premium gasoline blends that made Atlantic a household name across the East Coast. In 1966, Atlantic merged with California's Richfield Oil Corporation to form Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), creating one of the nation's largest integrated oil companies.
Stock certificates from major independent oil companies of the 1950s remain highly sought after by collectors, particularly those from Atlantic Refining due to its significant role in American petroleum history and its distinctive American Bank Note Company engraving work.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
