Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is an original First Mortgage Bond from The Brooklyn Union Gas Company, dated 1976, printed in blue and yellow. Features a vignette of three allegorical figures representing industry and commerce.
Cancelled with multiple punch holes across the face, indicating it was redeemed. Partial coupons remain attached. Shows some age toning consistent with its years. Offered as a collectible.
By 1976, The Brooklyn Union Gas Company stood as Brooklyn's lifeline utility amid New York City's near-bankruptcy crisis, serving over one million customers from Red Hook's industrial waterfront to Canarsie's growing residential blocks. Founded in 1895 through the merger of thirteen smaller gas companies, Brooklyn Union had weathered the Great Depression, two world wars, and massive demographic shifts to become one of the city's most essential services. The company's network of underground mains snaked beneath every Brooklyn neighborhood, from the brownstones of Park Slope to the new housing projects of East New York, delivering natural gas that heated homes and powered the borough's remaining manufacturing base. Through the tumultuous 1970s, Brooklyn Union modernized its infrastructure while maintaining service during the city's fiscal emergency.
This $1,000 bond represents the company's commitment to capital investment even during New York's darkest financial hour. Brooklyn Union would continue as an independent utility until 1998, when it merged with Long Island Lighting Company to form KeySpan Corporation. In February 2006, National Grid USA announced a $7.3 billion deal to acquire KeySpan, pending regulatory and shareholder approval. National Grid plc confirmed the acquisition's completion in 2007.
Utility bonds from the 1970s capture a critical moment when established companies maintained essential services through urban fiscal crisis, making them particularly sought after by collectors of New York financial history.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
