This is an original $1,000 sewer bond from the City of Poughkeepsie, dated December 1924, printed in rich brown ink. Features a vignette of the New York State coat of arms with allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice flanking a central shield topped with an eagle and rising sun. The elaborate border showcases intricate scrollwork and geometric patterns characteristic of 1920s municipal bond design.
Poughkeepsie, incorporated as a city in 1854, emerged as a vital industrial center along the Hudson River Valley by the early 20th century. The city housed major manufacturing operations including Vassar Brothers Institute and served as headquarters for several Hudson River steamboat lines that connected New York City to Albany. During the 1920s, Mayor John Sague spearheaded an ambitious municipal improvement campaign that included modernizing the city's antiquated sewer system, which had been overwhelmed by rapid industrial growth. This bond was part of a larger $500,000 infrastructure program that transformed Poughkeepsie's waterfront district and expanded service to the growing residential neighborhoods around Vassar College. The timing proved fortuitous—completed just before the 1929 crash, these improvements positioned Poughkeepsie to weather the Depression better than many Hudson Valley communities.
