Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original bond from The Delaware and Hudson Railroad Corporation, dated 1963.  Printed on cream paper in olive green ink, this First and General Mortgage 5½% Bond features a vignette of a train loading yard with two figures.

The Delaware and Hudson Railroad, chartered in 1823, began as the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, built to transport Pennsylvania coal to New York markets via the Hudson River. Founded by Philip Hone, future mayor of New York City, and backed by prominent New York merchants, the D&H became one of America's oldest transportation companies. The railroad pioneered early steam locomotion, importing the famous Stourbridge Lion from England in 1829 for the first steam locomotive trial in America. By 1963, when this bond was issued, the D&H had evolved from its canal origins into a vital freight railroad connecting the coal regions of Pennsylvania with the industrial centers of New York and New England. The company operated through the scenic Adirondack Mountains and Champlain Valley, serving as a crucial link between Canadian Pacific and eastern U.S. markets until its acquisition by Canadian Pacific in 1991.

You will receive a certificate similar to the one shown. While each piece shares the same design and era, slight variations in serial numbers, signatures, and natural aging may occur. This example includes cancellation markings, indicating it was redeemed, and shows the characteristic patina of a 60-year-old financial document.

Railroad bonds from the post-war era represent the final chapter of America's great railway expansion, making them increasingly sought-after by collectors interested in transportation history. This D&H piece captures both the golden age of railroading and the transition to modern freight operations. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
