This is an original stock certificate from the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company, dated 1925. Printed in orange, the certificate features a vignette of a large passenger steamship with multiple decks and smokestacks sailing on the Great Lakes. The design includes an ornate orange border with geometric patterns and corner elements.
You will receive a certificate similar to the one shown in photos. Each piece shares the design and era, with natural variations in serial numbers and aging that make every example unique. This certificate shows multiple punch holes through the left side, indicating it was redeemed when the shareholder sold their position.
In 1925, the Great Lakes passenger steamship industry was entering its final golden era, and the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company operated one of the most prestigious fleets on the inland seas. Founded in the 1850s, the company became famous for its luxurious passenger vessels that connected Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, and other Great Lakes ports, offering travelers an elegant alternative to crowded rail travel. The company's fleet included magnificent steamers like the City of Detroit III and City of Cleveland III — floating palaces with grand dining rooms, orchestras, and staterooms that rivaled ocean liners. By the 1920s, however, the rise of the automobile and improved highways were beginning to erode demand for passenger steamship service. The company struggled through the Depression and eventually ceased passenger operations, marking the end of an era when steamships were the preferred way to travel the Great Lakes. This certificate was issued to Harvey I. Osborne during the company's final profitable years, before the transformation of American travel forever changed the industry.
Great Lakes maritime certificates are highly prized by collectors, particularly those featuring the grand passenger steamers that once plied these inland waters. The combination of maritime history, regional significance, and the romantic era of Great Lakes travel makes this an appealing piece for transportation and regional history enthusiasts. Offered as a collectible.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
