Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original stock certificate from Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad Company, dated 1969, printed in blue. Features a vignette of a steam locomotive with trailing smoke on railroad tracks, with telegraph poles and railway infrastructure in the background, and a railway signal tower on the right side.

Cancelled with punch holes through the certificate face, indicating it was redeemed. The certificate was issued and some edge wear, consistent with its age. Offered as a collectible.

In 1969, Pennsylvania's railroad network was facing the greatest consolidation crisis in American transportation history. As a part of consolidating older leased lines under a massive, newly formed Penn Central umbrella, stock certificates for older, underlying subsidiaries (like the Erie & Pittsburgh) were still legally being reissued, exchanged, or updated to reflect the new corporate ownership

The Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad Company operated critical routes through western Pennsylvania's coal and steel corridor, connecting Pittsburgh's industrial might to eastern markets via the Erie system. Founded in the 1860s during the post-Civil War railroad boom, the company served the region's massive coal deposits and steel mills that powered American industry. The railroad's president signed this certificate during a turbulent period when Penn Central's 1968 merger had triggered industry-wide restructuring. By 1976, financial pressures would force the Erie and Pittsburgh into Conrail along with dozens of other northeastern carriers, ending over a century of independent operation through Pennsylvania's industrial heartland.

Railroad certificates from this transitional era document the final chapter of America's regional railroad companies before government consolidation.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
