This is an original stock certificate from Flushing Co-Operative Savings and Loan Association, dated 1888, printed in black.
The certificate shows age toning consistent with more than 135 years. It carries a large red ink cancellation written in cursive script across the face, and is also cancelled with punch holes near the signature area. Offered as a collectible.
The Flushing Co-Operative Savings and Loan Association was organized on March 6, 1888 chartered under Chapter 556 of the Laws of 1887, New York's enabling statute for cooperative savings institutions. Flushing in 1888 was not yet the dense urban neighborhood it would become after Queens' consolidation into New York City in 1898; it was a prosperous Long Island village with a Main Street commercial district, a commuter rail connection via the Long Island Rail Road, and a growing population of tradespeople, shopkeepers, and professionals who needed exactly the kind of institution this association was designed to be.
Cooperative savings and loan associations of this type were the primary vehicle through which working and middle-class families in late nineteenth-century America pooled small, regular deposits to finance home construction and purchase — a function that neither commercial banks nor private lenders reliably served at that scale. Chester Huntington served as the association's first President and signed this certificate personally alongside Secretary J. C. Randall, both men almost certainly drawn from Flushing's civic and merchant leadership. Institutions like this one were the direct forerunners of the mutual savings banks and federally chartered credit unions that would define American household finance through the twentieth century, making certificates from their founding years genuinely scarce records of how communities actually built wealth from the ground up.
Community-based financial institutions from the Gilded Age are rare, signed by its first president, and drawn from a neighborhood that would soon become part of New York City offers a window into a moment of civic organization that rarely makes it onto paper collectors can hold.

Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
