These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is an original stock certificate from H. M. Byllesby and Company, dated 1930, printed in orange. The design is purely typographic, relying on bold engraved lettering and an ornate interlocked monogram medallion featuring the initials H.M.B. in decorative format. A wide orange border frames the face, punctuated by a scalloped outer edge and repeating fleur-de-lis patterning across the border panels, with fine-line engraved rules and small ornamental corner devices completing the composition.
The certificate was cancelled with multiple punch holes along the left margin. The reverse displays a completed transfer endorsement signed by the original holder, providing documentation of the certificate's post-issuance history. Offered as a collectible.
H. M. Byllesby and Company was founded by Henry Marison Byllesby, a transformative electrical engineer who had worked under both George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison before establishing his own utilities empire in Chicago. By the 1920s, Byllesby had assembled one of America's most extensive utility holding company structures, controlling electric, gas, and water systems across dozens of cities from coast to coast. The firm operated as both a management company and investment vehicle, engineering and operating regional utility networks while also serving as a financial conduit for investors seeking exposure to the rapidly electrifying nation. On January 16, 1930—the date of this certificate—the United States was just three months past the October 1929 stock market crash, and utility stocks were among the few sectors maintaining investor confidence as the Depression deepened. Byllesby's empire, however, faced a far more existential threat: the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 forced the wholesale breakup of vast utility pyramids and reorganized the company's structure in the late 1930s and 1940s, a regulatory reckoning that reshaped the entire American utility landscape.
