Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

These are original stock certificates from Jack Eckerd Corporation dating back to the 1970s, printed in green and orange. Features a vignette of two male figures with a prominent letter 'E' between them.

The certificate was issued, shows punch holes through the center and right side, indicating it was redeemed and retired from circulation. Light age toning adds character to this piece of pharmacy retail history.

In 1971, Jack Eckerd was building what would become America's fourth-largest drugstore chain from his Florida headquarters. The company had evolved from Eckerd's 1952 purchase of three Tampa-area stores into a Southeast powerhouse known for pioneering 24-hour pharmacy service and drive-through windows. Eckerd himself was a transformative figure in retail pharmacy, the son of a Delaware druggist who recognized that Americans wanted convenience and extended hours from their neighborhood pharmacies. He expanded aggressively through acquisition, purchasing regional chains across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas while maintaining the personal service philosophy that differentiated Eckerd stores from emerging discount competitors. The company went public in 1961 and by 1971 operated over 400 locations, making it a Wall Street favorite during the retail expansion boom of the early 1970s. Eckerd sold the chain to J.C. Penney in 1997, which later sold it to CVS in 2004, ending the 52-year run of the Eckerd name in American pharmacy.

Pharmacy and drugstore certificates from this era represent the transformation of American retail healthcare. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
