This is an original, unissued Stock Certificate from the Jamaica and Brooklyn Road Company, dated in the 1880s. Printed on white paper stock in black ink. The certificate shows a par value of $20.
The Jamaica and Brooklyn Road Company was incorporated to operate horse-drawn omnibus and later streetcar services connecting the rural town of Jamaica, Queens, to the bustling waterfront districts of Brooklyn during the 1870s-1880s. This was a critical transportation link during Brooklyn's explosive growth period, when the independent city (before its 1898 consolidation into Greater New York) was rapidly expanding eastward toward Long Island. The company served the vital Jamaica Plank Road corridor, moving passengers between Jamaica's agricultural markets and Brooklyn's industrial waterfront along the East River. Like many early transit companies of this era, Jamaica and Brooklyn Road faced intense competition from rival omnibus lines and the emerging elevated railroad systems, ultimately being absorbed into Brooklyn's consolidated street railway network in the 1890s as electric trolleys replaced horse-drawn vehicles throughout Kings and Queens counties.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
