Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is an original bond from The Metropolitan Cross-Town Railway Company from 1890. Printed on white paper stock in green ink with a $500 denomination, it features a vignette of a horse-drawn streetcar labeled 'Metropolitan Railway Company 100' with passengers visible through windows, pulled by two horses through an urban New York City street scene.
The Metropolitan Cross-Town Railway Company provided vital east-west transit across Manhattan during the explosive growth of New York's streetcar network in the early 1900s. The company emerged during the consolidation wars between transit magnates Thomas Fortune Ryan and August Belmont Jr., who battled for control of Manhattan's lucrative surface and elevated lines. Ryan, through his Metropolitan Street Railway empire, had assembled dozens of smaller horse car and cable car lines into a unified system serving over 200 million passengers annually by 1902. The Cross-Town Railway was designed to connect the commercial districts of the Lower East Side with the fashionable brownstone neighborhoods of the West Village, running along 14th Street and 23rd Streets. However, the company was caught in the financial collapse of Ryan's Metropolitan empire in 1907, when investigations revealed massive stock watering and bond manipulation schemes that bankrupted the entire network.
You will receive a certificate similar to the one shown. While each piece shares the same design and era, slight variations in serial numbers, signatures, and natural aging may occur. This example includes cancellation markings, indicating it was redeemed, and shows age toning and minor edge wear that adds historical character.
New York transit bonds from the early 1900s represent a fascinating chapter in urban development history, capturing the transition from horse-drawn cars to electric trolleys that reshaped American cities. This piece documents both the ambition and the financial excess of the Gilded Age transportation boom. Offered as a collectible.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
