Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original stock certificate from the Mississippi and Missouri Rail Road Company, dated from the 1800s and printed in black. Features a vignette of the Mississippi river scene with a bridge spanning the water, set against rolling hill. Cows in the bottom center vignette.

Shows age with some discoloration and wear, along with visible fold lines that speak to its journey through time. The piece remains in good condition with no visible cancellation markings, indicating this share was never formally redeemed or retired from service.

In 1851, the Mississippi and Missouri Rail Road Company was founded as an ambitious venture that aimed to connect the great rivers of America. The company was part of the explosive railroad expansion that transformed the American landscape in the mid-19th century, when entrepreneurs and investors rushed to capitalize on the nation's westward movement.

The company operated during a time when railroad stocks were among the most speculative and sought-after investments in America, drawing capital from both domestic investors and European financiers who believed in the continent's unlimited potential. Like many ambitious railroad ventures of the period, the Mississippi and Missouri faced the challenges of raising capital, acquiring land rights, and constructing through difficult terrain, challenges that would ultimately determine which lines survived and which became footnotes in transportation history.

Railroad certificates from the 1850s represent some of the most historically significant pieces in American scripophily, documenting the era when steam power and steel rails began reshaping a nation. These certificates were issued during the golden age of American railroad expansion, when every major engraving house competed to create increasingly sophisticated security designs that would inspire investor confidence. The detailed vignette work and careful border patterns reflect the period's belief that a beautifully crafted certificate demonstrated corporate permanence and financial stability. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
