These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. This is an original stock certificate from National Asphalt Company, dated 1901, printed in green. A large American bald eagle with wings spread is featured on the center vignette, perched above a terrestrial globe showing the Americas, rendered with dramatic engraved detail and atmospheric cloud shading. The scalloped border frames the certificate with a repeating wave pattern and decorative corner medallions.
Issued to for one hundred shares of 6 Per Cent Cumulative Preferred Stock, marked Full Paid and Non-Assessable. Offered as a collectible.
National Asphalt Company was incorporated in New Jersey in May 1900, at the height of the great turn-of-the-century merger wave, as the holding company atop America's "asphalt trust." Formed to take control of the Asphalt Company of America, the 1899 combine that had consolidated the nation's major asphalt paving and Trinidad asphalt concerns just as automobile use began transforming demand for paved roads, National Asphalt acquired over 99% of that company's shares within months of its founding.
The empire proved short-lived. National Asphalt had guaranteed interest payments on nearly $30 million in collateral gold certificates issued against the trust's holdings, and when it defaulted in October 1901, the entire combine collapsed into receivership, producing one of the era's most storied corporate failures and years of litigation that reached the U.S. Court of Appeals.
Industrial infrastructure stocks from this era remain highly sought by collectors, particularly certificates representing the shift from horse-drawn transportation to automobile-age roadways. National Asphalt certificates capture a pivotal moment in American economic history when paving, asphalt production, and road construction became industries unto themselves.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
