Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original unissued bond from The New Haven Arena Company, dated 1927 and printed in blue. Features a vignette of an allegorical female figure representing Liberty or Justice, seated on a throne with classical drapery and holding a staff topped with an eagle.

This bond was issued, normal wear from handling and age with some minor edge wear but remains in very good condition with crisp printing and intact borders. The bond includes a full sheet of attached coupons numbered 9-30.

In 1927, New Haven was riding the wave of America's entertainment boom, anchored by its position as home to Yale University and Connecticut's second-largest city. The New Haven Arena Company was incorporated to build and operate a major entertainment venue in this culturally vibrant city, capitalizing on the era's appetite for boxing matches, ice hockey, concerts, and large-scale public events. The company issued these First Closed Mortgage bonds as part of a sophisticated financing structure, offering investors 6½% returns backed by the arena property itself. New Haven's location between New York and Boston made it an ideal stop for touring acts and sporting events, while the city's mix of university community and industrial workers provided a ready audience. The arena business proved challenging during the Depression years, as entertainment spending declined and many similar venues across the country struggled to meet their bond obligations.

Now it's home to the FBI Headquarters.

Bonds from 1920s entertainment venues represent a fascinating slice of American leisure history, capturing the optimism of the Jazz Age and the ambitious plans that preceded the market crash. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
