Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original, unissued stock certificate from the New York and Coney Island Railroad Company, printed on white paper stock in black ink with a $100 par value. Features a central oval vignette featuring a map of Brooklyn's Coney Island with a steamboat on the water and shoreline visible, surrounded by decorative borders.

The New York and Coney Island Railroad Company was incorporated to connect Manhattan with the emerging entertainment destination of Coney Island, playing a crucial role in transforming Brooklyn's remote peninsula into America's premier seaside resort. The railroad operated during Coney Island's golden age, when the area hosted three magnificent amusement parks - Luna Park, Dreamland, and Steeplechase Park - drawing millions of visitors annually via rail connections. The company was instrumental in making Coney Island accessible to New York's working classes, who could afford the nickel fare for a day at the beach and boardwalk. The railroad's success was tied directly to Coney Island's evolution from a remote fishing village to the "Playground of the World," complete with the famous Cyclone roller coaster, Nathan's Famous hot dogs, and the Wonder Wheel. As automobile travel increased and subway lines expanded, many of the independent railroad companies serving Coney Island were eventually absorbed into larger transit systems or ceased operations.

You will receive a certificate similar to the one shown. While each piece shares the same design and era, slight variations in serial numbers and natural aging may occur. This example shows clean, unissued condition with minor age toning.

Railroad certificates from New York's transit boom remain highly sought after by collectors, particularly those connected to iconic American destinations like Coney Island. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
