Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an extraordinary $50,000 bond certificate issued in 1918 by the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company, made out to William K. Vanderbilt, a key figure in America's Gilded Age railroad dynasty.

The certificate features a rich purple color, cancellation holes, and a detailed vignette depicting two trains in a busy rail yard surrounded by workers—a scene emblematic of the industrial might of early 20th-century America.

It is hand-signed by the company’s Vice President, adding a further layer of authenticity and historical value. Buyers will receive the exact product shown.

The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad was formed in 1869 through the merger of several major Northeastern lines, including the New York Central Railroad and the Hudson River Railroad. Under the leadership of industrial titan Cornelius Vanderbilt, the network became one of the most powerful and profitable transportation systems in the United States. William K. Vanderbilt, Cornelius’s grandson and the bond’s recipient, played a prominent role in expanding and modernizing the family’s railroad empire during his tenure.

By the early 20th century, the company was a crucial artery in the U.S. economy, transporting passengers and freight across key routes between New York, Chicago, and beyond. The issuance of high-value bonds like this one highlights the scale of investment and financial infrastructure required to operate such a vast system. In 1914, just a few years before this bond was issued, the company consolidated into the larger New York Central Railroad, which continued to operate until its 1968 merger with the Pennsylvania Railroad.

This bond is a rare artifact not only due to its high denomination and signature pedigree but also for its direct connection to one of the most influential railroad families in American history.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
