Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is an original stock certificate from New York Central Sleeping Car Company, dated 1878, printed in black ink. Features a vignette of a steam locomotive with passenger cars, smoke billowing from the stack. The certificate displays an elaborate border with geometric patterns and decorative corner elements.
You will receive a certificate from this same issue. Each piece shares the design and era, with natural variations in serial numbers and aging that make every example unique. The certificate bears multiple purple ink X marks across the face, indicating it was cancelled and retired from circulation. Time has given this piece its own character with some age-related discoloration and fold lines that add to its historical patina.
In 1878, Cornelius Vanderbilt II was consolidating his railroad empire into one of America's most powerful transportation networks, with sleeping car services representing the pinnacle of luxury travel. The New York Central Sleeping Car Company operated premium overnight accommodations on routes connecting New York to Chicago and points west, when a berth in a Pullman-style sleeper cost more than most workers earned in a week. Vanderbilt understood that wealthy passengers would pay handsomely for privacy and comfort during long-distance rail journeys, transforming what had been an ordeal into an elegant experience with mahogany-paneled compartments, fine linens, and porter service. The sleeping car business proved so lucrative that it attracted fierce competition from George Pullman's Palace Car Company, leading to rate wars and eventually consolidation under the larger New York Central Railroad system. The company's operations centered on Grand Central Depot in Manhattan, where travelers bound for the Great Lakes region and beyond began their journeys in unprecedented comfort.
Railroad certificates from the Gilded Age remain among the most sought-after pieces in scripophily, particularly those connected to the Vanderbilt transportation empire. This cancelled certificate represents the capital infrastructure that made transcontinental luxury travel possible for America's emerging wealthy class. Offered as a collectible.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
