Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is an original bond from New York City Seven Per Cent Bond Corporation of the City of New York, dated 1869, printed in pink ink. Signed by Mayor A. Oakey Hall. Features a central oval vignette depicting allegorical figures with an eagle and a classical female figure seated among symbols of commerce and industry.
You will receive the exact piece shown. As with all antique documents, time has given this certificate its own character, a one-of-a-kind artifact from 1869. The bond shows proper redemption with a green paper seal affixed to the left side. Age-related discoloration and fold lines add historical character to this municipal document.
In 1869, New York City was borrowing heavily to fund infrastructure projects while William "Boss" Tweed and his political machine controlled City Hall through systematic corruption. This bond bears the handwritten signature of Richard B. Connolly, the city's Comptroller who earned the nickname "Slippery Dick" for his role as the Tweed Ring's financial mastermind. Connolly orchestrated fraudulent billing schemes that inflated city contracts by millions, including the notorious courthouse project that ballooned from $250,000 to over $13 million. The ring's downfall came in 1871 when The New York Times published leaked financial records, leading to Connolly's arrest and flight to Paris with stolen city funds. Mayor A. Oakey Hall, whose signature also appears on this bond, was later tried for his complicity in the schemes that made the Tweed Ring synonymous with American political corruption.
Municipal bonds from the Tweed era represent one of the most infamous chapters in American political history, making them highly sought pieces in scripophily. Offered as a collectible.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
