This is an original bond from Northern Pacific Railway Equipment Trust, dated 1960, printed in burgundy brown. A diesel streamliner locomotive approaching head-on is featured on the upper-center vignette. Printed by the American Bank Note Company.
The certificate is cancelled with punch holes. Condition is very good. Offered as a collectible.
Northern Pacific Railway was one of the great transcontinental railroads chartered by Congress in 1864. By 1883, when the line was completed with a golden spike ceremony attended by former president Ulysses S. Grant, the railroad had fundamentally reshaped the geography and economy of the Pacific Northwest, opening vast territories to settlement and commerce. The road ran from Lake Superior to Puget Sound through some of the most challenging terrain in North America. Jay Cooke, the Philadelphia financier who initially backed the construction, saw his firm collapse in 1873, triggering the panic that nearly destroyed the entire rail system. James J. Hill and J.P. Morgan later reorganized the railroad, and their struggle for control of northern rail routes produced the landmark Northern Securities Company antitrust case of 1904, which reached the Supreme Court. By 1960, when this equipment trust bond was issued, Northern Pacific had endured the Depression, two world wars, and the rise of competition from automobiles and airlines—yet remained vital to freight and passenger service across the northern tier. In 1970, the railroad merged with Great Northern, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, and Spokane, Portland and Seattle to form the Burlington Northern Railroad.
Equipment trust certificates were a specialized financing instrument that allowed railroads to acquire locomotives and rolling stock without taking on corporate debt directly. Collectors pursue Northern Pacific bonds and equipment trusts for the railroad's legendary history, the quality of their vignette art, and the American Bank Note Company's craftsmanship. This particular example, part of a $6,495,000 series issued in mid-twentieth-century America, captures the railroad at a pivotal moment—modernizing its fleet even as the industry faced structural transformation.

Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
