Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original stock certificate from Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company, dated 1927, printed in orange. Features a vignette of a double-decker electric trolley car with horse-drawn omnibuses and additional streetcars on railway tracks set against an urban backdrop.

This issued certificate shows normal aging and wear consistent with its nearly century-old vintage, bearing a purple rubber stamp cancellation that indicates the shares were properly redeemed. The clear cancellation markings are typical of securities that completed their lifecycle through the company's transfer system.

In 1927, Philadelphia was the transit hub of the Northeast, with Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company operating one of America's most extensive urban transportation networks. The company emerged from the consolidation of numerous smaller trolley and omnibus lines that had served Philadelphia since the 1850s, eventually controlling hundreds of miles of track throughout the city and suburbs. Led by prominent Philadelphia financiers and overseen by the powerful Pennsylvania Railroad interests, PRT became a cornerstone of the city's infrastructure during the automobile's early adoption period. The company pioneered electric trolley technology and maintained one of the largest fleets of double-decker streetcars in the nation, connecting neighborhoods from South Philadelphia to Germantown with reliable daily service. Philadelphia Rapid Transit was eventually absorbed into the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) system in the 1960s as public agencies took over urban transit operations nationwide.

Transportation certificates from the 1920s capture a pivotal moment when American cities were modernizing their transit systems while the automobile industry was still emerging. The detailed trolley vignette on this certificate represents both the artistic craftsmanship that financial printers brought to corporate documents and the civic pride that transit companies took in their rolling stock. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
