This is an original bond from the Republic of Colombia, dated October 1, 1940, due October 1970. Printed in green, the certificate features a vignette of three allegorical figures in classical robes representing Liberty or Justice with supporting figures against a clouded background. The design incorporates a Celtic-style knotwork border with repeating ornamental motifs.
This certificate shows multiple punch holes through the center, indicating it was redeemed or retired from service. Some age toning and fold lines are visible, giving the piece authentic character from its five-decade journey through international bond markets.
In the early 1900s, Colombia was emerging from decades of civil war and seeking to modernize its infrastructure through foreign investment. The country had just concluded the devastating Thousand Days' War and was working to rebuild its economy under President Marco Fidel Suárez, whose conservative administration actively courted American capital for railroad construction, port development, and industrial expansion. This 9% external sinking fund bond was part of Colombia's aggressive push to finance modernization projects, particularly the completion of railway networks that would connect the coffee-growing regions to Caribbean ports. The bonds were marketed heavily to American investors during the post-World War I economic boom, when U.S. capital was flowing freely into Latin American infrastructure projects.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
