Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original stock certificate from Standard Oil Trust, issued to John Huntington, dated April 5, 1882, printed on white paper in rich green, signed by the world's first billionaire, John D. Rockefeller. The certificate was issued to John Huntington for 250 shares at $100 par value.

Comes with a PASS-CO certificate of authentication. Features a vignette of the United States Capitol building with its distinctive dome, surrounded by architectural details and flourishes. You will receive the exact piece shown, along with the certificate of authenticity. The signatures have been crossed out with red ink, symbolizing the certificate was redeemed, no longer circulated.

In the 1860s, John Huntington, who was issued this certificate, became a major player in the oil refining business in Cleveland, patenting improvements to oil refining methods, heating furnaces, and barrel production. In 1870, Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company bought out the refining business that John Huntington worked at.

In 1882, Cleveland industrialist John D. Rockefeller revolutionized American business by creating the Standard Oil Trust, consolidating his sprawling oil empire under a single legal entity that controlled over 90% of America's oil refining capacity. Rockefeller, whose signature as president on this certificate, became the world's first billionaire through his ruthless efficiency and vertical integration of the petroleum industry. The trust structure allowed Rockefeller to coordinate operations across state lines while avoiding corporate regulations, making Standard Oil the most powerful monopoly in American history. Secretary Henry H. Flagler, whose signature also appears, was one of Rockefeller's key lieutenants who helped orchestrate the company's aggressive expansion and later became known as one of the shrewdest financiers of the Gilded Age. The Supreme Court dissolved the trust in 1911 under the Sherman Antitrust Act, breaking it into 34 separate companies including Standard Oil of New Jersey (later Exxon) and Standard Oil of New York (later Mobil).

As with all antique documents, time has given this certificate its own character, a one-of-a-kind artifact from 1882. The certificate shows some age toning and minor fold lines that add to its historical authenticity.

Standard Oil certificates represent the pinnacle of American industrial monopoly collecting, with Rockefeller-signed pieces being among the most coveted scripophily items from the Gilded Age. This certificate captures the moment when America's oil industry was consolidated under one man's vision, fundamentally reshaping the global economy. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
