Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is a large bond certificate issued by the New York State Comptroller's office in the 1940s and 50s, printed in green. It was issued and subsequently cancelled, leaving behind one of the more visually striking documents from the era of postwar American infrastructure finance. You will receive a certificate similar to the one pictured. Offered as a collectible.
The bond financed what would become one of the most ambitious public works projects in American history: the New York State Thruway. At 570 miles, it remains the longest toll superhighway in the United States, and its construction reshaped how New York State moved people, goods, and commerce for generations.
The story behind this certificate began not with ribbon-cuttings but with a growing recognition in Albany that the automobile had permanently changed the calculus of economic geography. New York's existing roads were built for a different era.
A Timeline of the Thruway's Creation
1942 — State leaders formally acknowledged the need for a modern superhighway network capable of handling postwar traffic volumes and interstate commerce.
1944 — The State Legislature authorized the Bureau of Public Works to begin preliminary engineering and route planning.
1946 — Ground was broken, setting the project in motion during the early optimism of the postwar boom.
1950 — The New York State Thruway Authority was created as an independent public corporation, empowered to finance construction through toll revenue bonds — taking the project off the state's balance sheet and putting it on the road itself.
1954 — The first toll section opened: 115 miles of limited-access highway that offered a glimpse of what was coming.
The financing mechanism was as important as the asphalt. By issuing toll revenue bonds rather than general obligation debt, the Thruway Authority established that a highway could pay for itself — a model that influenced infrastructure finance across the country. The bond you're holding is a physical artifact of that wager on the American road.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
