Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original stock certificate from State of New York, dated March 8th, 1867, printed in black ink. Features a vignette of two allegorical female figures flanking the New York state coat of arms, representing Liberty and Justice positioned on either side of the state seal. The certificate displays an ornate engraved border with portrait medallions in decorative corner panels. It was signed by the state's Comptroller in the bottom right.

You will receive the exact piece shown. As with all antique documents, time has given this certificate its own character, a one-of-a-kind artifact from 1867. The certificate bears four punch holes through the center, indicating it was properly redeemed and retired from active use. Shows appropriate age toning and fold lines consistent with a 19th-century government document, adding to its authentic historical character.

In 1867, New York State was aggressively modernizing its financial infrastructure to fund massive post-Civil War reconstruction and expansion projects. The state had emerged from the conflict as America's financial powerhouse, with Albany coordinating ambitious programs to build canals, railroads, and public institutions that would cement New York's dominance in commerce and industry. This certificate was issued.

The state's comptroller office, which signed these certificates, managed complex financial arrangements that funded everything from the expansion of the Erie Canal system to new railroad connections linking New York City to the growing industrial centers of Buffalo and Rochester. These state stock certificates represented direct investment in New York's transformation from a war-torn economy into the nation's undisputed center of finance and commerce.

State-issued securities from the Reconstruction era represent a fascinating chapter in American financial history, documenting how states leveraged private capital to rebuild and modernize after the Civil War. New York's financial instruments from this period are particularly sought after by collectors interested in the intersection of government finance and economic development. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
