This is an original bond from the State of South Carolina, dated Charleston, 1860s. Printed on white paper in black ink, the certificate features the South Carolina state seal with two classical allegorical figures with a palmetto tree, along with a small vignette of Charleston showing buildings and a palm tree.
This Military Defence Bond represents South Carolina's efforts to finance its defense capabilities, when the state faced numerous military challenges from the War of 1812 through the Civil War era.
