Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original stock certificate from The Acacia Gold Mining Company, dated 1899. Printed on paper stock in gold and black ink, the certificate features a central vignette of an acacia tree with detailed foliage and branches, rendered in fine line engraving style. The design includes an ornate decorative border with scrollwork in gold and brown coloring, and bears handwritten signatures of the company's President and Secretary.

The Acacia Gold Mining Company was incorporated during the height of Colorado's second gold boom, when the Cripple Creek district was producing more gold than any other mining camp in the world. Founded in the final years of the 19th century, the company operated during an era when Winfield Scott Stratton, the carpenter-turned-millionaire, had just sold his Independence Mine for $10 million, and Spencer Penrose was building his mining and milling empire that would transform Colorado Springs into the "Little London" of the West. The company's choice of the acacia tree as its symbol reflected the optimism of Colorado mining ventures, many of which were organized by Eastern capitalists who had never set foot in the Rocky Mountain camps where fortunes were won and lost daily. Tucker, Ballard & Co. served as trustees, handling the complex web of mining stock transfers that characterized Colorado's speculative mining economy during this golden age of American mineral extraction.

You will receive a certificate similar to the one shown. While each piece shares the same design and era, slight variations in serial numbers, signatures, and natural aging may occur. This example includes cancellation markings, indicating it was redeemed, with punch holes throughout the certificate that add to its authentic character as a genuine mining document from the Victorian era.

Colorado mining certificates from the 1890s gold boom represent some of the most historically significant pieces in American scripophily, capturing the entrepreneurial spirit that built the American West. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
