Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original unissued stock certificate from The Anthracite Beer Company, dated 1900s. Printed in forest green ink, the certificate features a central oval vignette depicting two horses in dynamic motion—one rearing white horse and one brown horse positioned in a landscape setting. The border displays ornate geometric patterns with repeating diamond and star motifs.

You will receive the exact piece shown. As with all antique documents, time has given this certificate its own character — a genuinely one-of-a-kind artifact from 1900. The certificate shows no signs of cancellation and retains its original green coloring with some age toning and minor edge wear that adds character to this piece of brewing history.

In 1900, Scranton and the anthracite coal region of northeastern Pennsylvania pulsed with industrial energy, as immigrant miners and steelworkers created a thirsty market for local breweries. The Anthracite Beer Company emerged during this golden age of regional brewing, when hundreds of small breweries served tight-knit neighborhoods with fresh, locally-made beer delivered by horse-drawn wagons—precisely the transportation method depicted in the certificate's equine vignette. The company's name directly referenced the hard coal that powered the region's economy and the working-class communities of Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazleton who formed their core market. Like most regional breweries, Anthracite faced extinction during Prohibition and the subsequent industry consolidation that favored large national brands over local operations. The company ultimately vanished as corporate giants like Anheuser-Busch absorbed the American brewing landscape, leaving only these certificates as reminders of Pennsylvania's rich brewing heritage.

Brewing certificates from the pre-Prohibition era remain highly collectible, representing both the golden age of American regional brewing and the working-class industrial communities that sustained these operations. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
