Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original Stock Certificate from The Midland Terminal Railway Company, dated 1880. Printed on olive green paper stock in darker green ink, the certificate features a vignette depicting workers laying railroad track in a mountainous landscape with pine trees and a railway viaduct spanning across a valley in the background. The ornate border displays intricate scrollwork and geometric patterns throughout the design.

The Midland Terminal Railway was incorporated to connect Colorado Springs with the gold mining camps of Cripple Creek, serving the legendary mining district that would produce over $500 million in gold. The railway was originally promoted by Irving Howbert, a prominent Colorado Springs banker and real estate developer, and later came under the control of Albert Eugene Carlton, who had made his fortune in the Pennsylvania oil fields before moving west. Carlton transformed the line into a narrow-gauge marvel that climbed through some of the most challenging terrain in Colorado, winding through the Ute Pass and ascending over 10,000 feet to reach the gold camps. The railroad became essential to the Cripple Creek Gold Rush of the 1890s, transporting both miners and millions of dollars worth of gold ore down from the world's greatest gold camp. The line operated until 1949, when declining mining activity and competition from automobiles finally ended its six-decade run through the Rocky Mountains.

You will receive a certificate similar to the one shown. While each piece shares the same design and era, slight variations in serial numbers, signatures, and natural aging may occur. This example shows minor edge wear typical of age but remains in very good condition with clean, readable text and vivid coloring.

Colorado mining railroad certificates from the 1880s represent some of the most historically significant pieces in scripophily, connecting collectors to the dramatic gold rush era that shaped the American West. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
