This is an original stock certificate from The National City Bank of New York, dated September 1929. Printed on cream paper stock in dark green ink, the certificate features a central circular seal depicting allegorical figures alongside New York cityscape elements. It has been issued and redeemed as seen by cancellation holes.
The National City Bank of New York was founded in 1812 and grew to become one of America's most powerful financial institutions under the leadership of James Stillman and later Charles E. Mitchell. Mitchell, known as "Sunshine Charley," transformed the bank into a retail banking giant during the 1920s, pioneering consumer lending and branch banking. The bank became synonymous with Wall Street excess during the Roaring Twenties, with Mitchell serving on the Federal Reserve Board while aggressively promoting stock speculation. Headquartered in the heart of Manhattan's financial district, National City Bank financed everything from South American railroads to German war reparations. The timing of this certificate—issued just one month before Black Tuesday—makes it a poignant artifact of the pre-crash euphoria, as Mitchell's empire would soon crumble under congressional investigation and public disgrace.
