Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original bond from The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company, dated 1913, printed in green or orange. Features a vignette of Grand Central Terminal with its classical facade and columns, showing the terminal complex and surrounding Manhattan cityscape - or a harbor scene with a steam train and ship. Comes with a sheet of coupons.

You will receive a certificate similar to the one shown in photos. Each piece shares the design and era, with natural variations in serial numbers and aging that make every example unique. This example is cancelled with a single punch hole through the center upper portion, indicating it was redeemed or retired. Light age toning and minor edge wear add genuine character to this century-old document.

In 1913, the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad was completing the most ambitious transportation project in American history under the leadership of Chauncey M. Depew, whose facsimile signature graces this bond. Depew, a former U.S. Senator and legendary orator, had transformed the railroad from a collection of regional lines into America's most powerful transportation empire, stretching from New York to Chicago along the famous Water Level Route. The company was simultaneously electrifying its approach into Manhattan and constructing the magnificent Grand Central Terminal, which opened that same year as the crown jewel of American railroad architecture. This Refunding and Improvement Mortgage Bond helped finance the massive infrastructure improvements that included burying sixteen miles of track in Manhattan and creating the underground terminal complex that remains one of New York's most celebrated landmarks. The New York Central would dominate passenger and freight service for decades before merging with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 to form Penn Central.

Railroad certificates from the golden age of American railroading remain among the most sought-after pieces in scripophily, particularly those featuring architectural vignettes of famous terminals. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
