Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is an orange bond certificate from The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company dated 1913 for $10,000, due in 100 years (2013). It has been issued and cancelled (seen with punch-holes in top right corner). A beautiful illustration of Grand Central station on the top vignette. Raised seal in lower left of certificate.
You will receive a similar certificate to the one shown in the photos. Ships flat.
The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company was formed in 1869 through the merger of the New York Central Railroad and the Hudson River Railroad. This consolidated system helped build a direct, efficient line from New York City northward through the Hudson Valley and west to Chicago—solidifying its importance as a backbone of American industry.
In 1913, the same year this bond was issued, Grand Central Terminal officially opened. This architectural marvel replaced earlier depots on the same site and instantly became one of the busiest and most celebrated transportation hubs in the country. Behind Grand Central, the air rights above the rail yard were gradually developed—culminating decades later in what became the Pan Am Building, now the MetLife Building, constructed in 1963. These bonds were often issued to finance infrastructure development, including the expansion of rail lines and terminals.
After a series of financial struggles and mergers, the New York Central merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 to form Penn Central, which went bankrupt in 1970. Much of the company's rail infrastructure was eventually folded into Amtrak and Conrail, and later privatized or acquired by companies like CSX and Norfolk Southern. Portions of the old NYC lines, especially the Empire Corridor, remain vital to today’s rail system.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
