Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts (THCR), was established in 1995 as a publicly traded company by Donald Trump, focused on casino and hotel operations in Atlantic City, New Jersey, before expanding to other locations. The flagship properties in Atlantic City included the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, opened in 1984, the Trump Taj Mahal, acquired in 1988 and opened in 1990, and Trump Marina (formerly Trump’s Castle), purchased in the mid-1980s.
Despite initial success, THCR faced financial challenges throughout its history. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2004, leading to a name change to Trump Entertainment Resorts, and again in 2009, owing $1.2 billion. The Taj Mahal, in particular, struggled to meet its financial obligations, with Trump having to borrow at high interest rates to keep it operational.
Over time, Trump’s involvement in the company diminished. In 2009, he sold his interest in the Trump Taj Mahal, and the company continued to face challenges, with properties closing or being sold off. The Trump Taj Mahal, once promoted as the “eighth wonder of the world,” closed permanently in 2016.
In 2014, Carl Icahn, a prominent billionaire investor, acquired Trump Entertainment Resorts. Icahn’s involvement brought new dynamics to the struggling properties. He invested $20 million to keep the Taj Mahal operational through bankruptcy proceedings, but faced significant challenges, including a crippling strike by the Unite-HERE union in 2016. Citing losses of about $300 million, Icahn ultimately closed the Taj Mahal in October 2016. In March 2017, he sold the shuttered property to Hard Rock International and two New Jersey investors for an undisclosed amount.
Initially seen as a symbol of luxury and success, the company’s properties and stock ultimately faced financial difficulties, leading to multiple bankruptcies, ownership changes, and eventual closures and sales.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
