Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original set of six (6x) stock certificates from United Stores Corporation, dated 1930-1950s, printed in purple, green, yellow, blue, pink and brown. Features a central circular medallion containing the letters 'USC' flanked by two allegorical female figures with flowing robes and wings, positioned symmetrically on either side of the emblem.

Good condition with clean presentation and color retention, displaying only minor edge wear consistent with its age. The certificates were cancelled, indicating they were formally redeemed.

In 1930, the United States was sliding into the depths of the Great Depression, and retail businesses like United Stores Corporation faced unprecedented challenges as consumer spending collapsed. United Stores Corporation operated as a retail chain company during this turbulent period, part of the consolidation movement that saw independent stores combining resources to compete with emerging department store giants. The company was led by executives who believed that unified purchasing power and standardized operations could weather the economic storm better than fragmented independent retailers. Founded during the retail boom of the 1920s, United Stores represented the era's faith in corporate consolidation and economies of scale. However, like many retail ventures of the period, the company struggled against the deflationary pressures and reduced consumer demand that characterized the early 1930s, ultimately disappearing from the corporate landscape as the Depression deepened.

This certificate captures a pivotal moment when American retail was transforming from local merchants to corporate chains, with each share representing a bet on the future of organized commerce. Stock certificates from Depression-era retail companies are particularly sought after by collectors for their historical significance and relative scarcity, as many of these enterprises failed to survive the economic upheaval. The allegorical figures and formal presentation reflect the optimism and corporate ambitions of the pre-crash era. Offered as a collectible.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
