Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is an original issued stock certificate from Walgreen Co., dated September 23, 1937, printed in orange. Features a vignette of an eagle with outstretched wings, perched and facing left against a cream background. Facsimile signature of Charles R. Walgreen present.
The certificate shows age and handling with multiple punch hole cancellations through the certificate face, indicating it was redeemed from active use. These cancellation markings are typical of certificates that completed their lifecycle in the financial markets.
In 1937, Charles R. Walgreen Sr. was transforming the American drugstore from a neighborhood apothecary into a streamlined retail powerhouse. Founded in Chicago in 1901, Walgreen's had grown from a single South Side pharmacy into a chain of over 600 stores by the time this certificate was issued. Walgreen pioneered the modern drugstore concept with soda fountains, lunch counters, and the revolutionary idea that pharmacies could be destinations for daily convenience shopping. The company went public in 1927, and by 1937, Walgreen's had survived the market crash and was expanding aggressively during the Depression by acquiring distressed competitors and opening stores in prime downtown locations. The chain's signature corner locations and distinctive script logo were becoming fixtures of American Main Streets from Chicago to California.
Pharmacy and retail certificates from the Depression era capture a pivotal moment when American commerce was professionalizing and consolidating. The major engraving houses of the 1930s produced these certificates as both financial instruments and symbols of corporate legitimacy during uncertain economic times. Offered as a collectible.

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.
Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.
Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.
Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.
Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.
Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
