Rectangular inner border of small repeating scallop and wave elements with a fine cross-hatched band along the outer edge of the central panel.
Engraved portrait of a young German man in the upper right panel, after Albrecht Dürer's Portrait of a Young Man, this design is known among collectors as the famous "Vampire Note"
Berlin, January 1922, Germany was sliding into one of the most catastrophic currency collapses ever recorded. The Reichsbank, central bank of the German Empire since 1876, was printing money at a pace that systematically destroyed the Mark. The crisis was rooted in Germany's decision to finance World War One through debt rather than taxation, compounded by the reparations imposed at Versailles in 1919.
Under Rudolf Havenstein, Reichsbank President from 1908 until his death in November 1923, the bank chose to monetize government debt with ever-larger denominations rather than restrict supply. A note like this one represented a substantial sum when printed in January 1922, and was nearly worthless within months. By November 1923, a single US dollar traded for over four trillion Marks, and the Reichsbank issued a 100 trillion Mark note before the currency was abolished and replaced by the Rentenmark.
These January 1922 notes capture the early phase of the spiral, before the astronomical denominations that followed, making it a favorite entry point for collectors of economic history, European history, and monetary policy.
