This is an original Warrant from The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, dated January 24, 1913, printed in dark brown. The document is typographic in design, framed by an engraved border featuring repeating lace-pattern bands along the top and bottom, with stacked cartouche columns on the sides and rosette medallions at each corner.
Issued to J. A. Trossbach and countersigned by the Office of the Treasurer in Baltimore, this warrant entitles the bearer to subscribe for Three Hundred Sixty-One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars of the company's Twenty-Year 4.5% Convertible Gold Bonds at $955 per $1,000 bond. The back carries a completed Form of Assignment, signed by J. A. Trossbach and witnessed on February 11, 1913, documenting the warrant's transfer before the first installment came due.
Offered as a collectible.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, chartered in 1827, was the first common-carrier railroad in the United States, forging a corridor from Baltimore's harbor to the Ohio River and eventually to Chicago and St. Louis. By 1913, the B&O commanded one of the great trunk lines of American railroads, and this warrant was part of a major international bond offering coordinated through Europe's most prominent banking houses—Speyer Brothers of London, Deutsche Bank of Berlin, M. M. Warburg and Co. of Hamburg, and Societe de Credit Suisse of Zurich. The syndication itself was a marker of the B&O's standing: only the tier-one American railroads could command such European capital on such terms. The document bears witness to a moment when American railroad finance depended on transatlantic coordination between New York, London, and Berlin. The B&O remained independent until 1962, when the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway absorbed it, eventually merging into the CSX Transportation system in 1987 after nearly 160 years as a sovereign line.
Gilded Age railroad warrants from major trunk lines remain among the most sought pieces in scripophily. The B&O's historical prominence, combined with the documentary evidence of the assignment on the back, makes this warrant a multi-layered record of how American industrial finance actually worked in the early 20th century.
