This is a preferred stock certificate for Boston Elevated Railway Company (BERy) from 1931, cancelled in orange color with stamps and signatures present. Offered as a collectable.
The city of Boston had elevated trains just like Chicago and New York City, courtesy of the Boston Elevated Railway Company. The first line, running between Sullivan Square and Dudley Street (Main Line Elevated), opened in 1901, with the Atlantic Avenue Elevated, Cambridge-Dorchester Line opening shortly after.
In 1931, the time of this certificate's printing, BERy was transitioning from direct current to alternating current, which allowed for more efficient power distribution and let the company expand its footprint across Boston and the surrounding areas.
Over the years, BERy would transition from elevated trains to streetcars, then underground trains, later adding buses to their route maps to help Bostonians get around the city.
The Main Line Elevated and Cambridge-Dorchester Line would become what is known and the Orange and Red line today.
