This is an original bond from The Broadway Surface Railroad Company, dated 1884, printed in black. The vignette shows Broadway (New York City) as a commercial artery: a wide avenue receding into the distance, flanked by multi-story Victorian commercial buildings and a church steeple, with horse-drawn streetcars and carriages moving beneath mature street trees. Allegorical figures at the upper left and an American eagle at the lower left. Printed by Arthur Branen of 116 Duane Street, New York.
A large red overprint stamped across the face in bold numerals served as the redemption mark upon maturity, and the impression is heavy enough to show through to the back. Some age toning and minor soiling are present; the paper is otherwise intact with no tears. Offered as a collectible.
On July 1, 1884, Broadway in New York City was the busiest street in the busiest city in the Western Hemisphere, and the horse-drawn cars of The Broadway Surface Railroad Company were the primary reason millions of New Yorkers could move along it at all. The company operated one of Manhattan's most heavily trafficked surface routes at a moment when the city's street railway network was a fragmented tangle of competing franchises, each jealously guarding its segment of pavement. J. A. Richmond, who signed this bond as President, led the company during this fiercely competitive era, when surface railways were simultaneously the arteries of urban commerce and the battleground for some of the most aggressive franchise politics in American municipal history. The bond itself was issued under a mortgage securing $1,500,000 in aggregate obligations, with The Twenty-Third Street Railway Company providing a guarantee on the back panel, signed by its President Jacob Sharff — a detail that speaks to the interlocking financial relationships among Manhattan's surface lines.
By the 1890s, the consolidation wave that produced the Metropolitan Street Railway system swept up many of these independent operators, folding Broadway's horse-car routes into a unified network that would itself be electrified and eventually absorbed into what became New York City Transit. This bond, payable July 1, 1924, carried an interest endorsement stamped as paid to June 1, 1925, confirming it was redeemed after maturity rather than defaulted upon.
Manhattan transit bonds from the horse-car era are genuinely scarce, and a piece depicting Broadway itself — the street that defined commercial New York — with its original redemption mark and a guarantor's signature on the reverse draws collectors of both New York City history and nineteenth-century transportation ephemera.
