This is an original mortgage bond from The Broadway Surface Railroad Company from 1895, printed on cream paper with an elaborate black ornate border. The Broadway Surface Railroad Company operated horse-drawn and later cable car lines along Broadway in New York City during the late 19th century. As one of the early surface transit companies in Manhattan, it played a crucial role in the development of New York's public transportation system before the advent of electric streetcars and subways.
The company was eventually consolidated into larger transit systems as New York modernized its urban transportation network.
This bond includes cancellation holes indicating it was properly redeemed, and shows attractive age toning that adds character to this historic financial instrument.
