This is an original bond from the City of Yonkers, dated 1875 signed by the mayor, Joseph Masten. Printed in red, the document features a spread-winged American eagle at the top center flanked by two rosette medallions. A gold embossed city seal is affixed to the upper left. Printed by W. Huber, Printer, New York.
The bond shows a fold lines, with sligt foxing and brown staining along the fold lines and edges. The gold embossed city seal remains intact and legible. The bond is uncancelled, a notable feature for collectors. Offered as a collectible.
Yonkers in 1875 was a city mid-transformation. Incorporated just three years earlier, in 1872, it had grown quickly from a Hudson River mill town into one of Westchester County's most industrially active municipalities.
The Otis Elevator Company, founded in Yonkers by Elisha Otis, whose 1852 safety brake invention made the modern skyscraper commercially viable, was already operating along the waterfront. The Alexander Smith & Sons Carpet Company, one of the largest carpet manufacturers in the world, employed thousands of Yonkers residents and defined the city's working-class neighborhoods for decades. This consolidation bond was issued to reorganize the city's accumulated municipal debt as it built out the roads, sewers, and public infrastructure demanded by that rapid growth. The bond carried seven percent interest, payable semi-annually on April 1st and October 1st at the Office of the City Treasurer, with principal due April 1, 1892.
Municipal bonds from Gilded Age New York cities are a niche but steady corner of scripophily, particularly when they carry physical seals, handwritten official signatures, and remain uncancelled. This piece connects directly to the civic machinery of a Hudson River industrial city at its moment of self-definition.
