This is an original stock certificate from Cleveland Indians Baseball Company, Inc., dated 1998.
This listing comes along with two quarterly earnings reports from the second and third-quarter of 1998 and a pamphlet of souvenir pages from the Beacon Journal.
The face of this certificate is dominated by a full-color aerial photograph of Jacobs Field in Cleveland, showing the baseball diamond surrounded by a packed house with the Cleveland skyline rising behind the outfield walls. The Cleveland Indians script logo appears prominently above the photograph. A dense vertical column of repeating shield-shaped motifs runs the full length of the left edge, printed in crimson as a security pattern. The photograph is credited to Mort Tucker Photography.
The certificate is in Very Good condition, with minor folds & handling wear along the edges and no significant tears, or stains. It carries no cancellation markings, making this an uncancelled example. Offered as a collectible.
The Cleveland Indians Baseball Company, Inc. was the corporate entity through which the franchise operated during one of the most successful stretches in its modern history. By 1998, the Indians had become one of the most dominant teams in the American League, having reached the World Series in 1995 and 1997 and selling out every home game at Jacobs Field for what would ultimately become a record-breaking consecutive sellout streak of 455 games. The stadium itself, which opened in 1994 and appears in the certificate photograph, was named for Richard E. Jacobs, who signed this certificate as Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer. Jacobs and his brother David had purchased the franchise in 1986 when the Indians were struggling both on the field and financially, and it was under his ownership that the club was rebuilt into a perennial contender and Jacobs Field was developed as part of the Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex in downtown Cleveland. Jacobs sold the team to Larry Dolan in 2000 for a reported $323 million, a figure that reflected the extraordinary turnaround he had overseen. The certificate was issued to Rebecca J. Cochran of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, a community in Summit County just south of Akron and roughly 30 miles from Jacobs Field, placing this shareholder squarely in the heart of Indians country during the club's peak years.
Sports franchise stock certificates from this period are actively collected, and examples tied to pennant-contending teams during their championship windows draw particular interest. The photographic vignette of Jacobs Field makes this piece instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with Cleveland baseball history.
