This is an original stock certificate from Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc, aka CBS, dated 1975, printed in orange. The face features an allegorical female figure standing in three-quarter pose, her right arm extended to hold a torch aloft, wearing a flowing Greco-Roman gown and laurel wreath. A red rubber stamp reading "Name Changed / CBS Inc." crosses the face, documenting the precise moment the network's corporate identity officially contracted to three letters.
The certificate shows light age toning consistent with its fifty years. It is cancelled with punch holes along the right edge. The reverse bears transfer processing stamps and a signature guarantee, adding a layer of institutional provenance. Offered as a collectible.
January 1975 was a pivotal month inside the CBS executive suite: Arthur Taylor, whose printed signature appears as President on this certificate, had been at the helm since 1972 and was in the middle of a turbulent tenure that would end with his surprise dismissal by William S. Paley in 1976. Taylor had come to CBS from International Paper and brought a corporate discipline that clashed with the network's creative culture, even as CBS dominated the prime-time ratings with All in the Family, M*A*S*H, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Paley himself is the central figure in any CBS story: he acquired control of the struggling network in 1928 at age 26 for $400,000, then spent the next half-century building it into a cultural institution that employed Edward R. Murrow, defined American radio journalism during World War II, and delivered the Beatles to a television audience of 73 million in February 1964. By the time this certificate was issued, CBS had already begun diversifying beyond broadcasting, acquiring the New York Yankees, Fender guitars, and publisher Holt, Rinehart and Winston. The 1974 corporate name change to CBS Inc., memorialized by the stamp on this very certificate, was the formal acknowledgment that the company had outgrown its original identity. CBS was eventually acquired by Viacom in 2000, spun off as an independent company in 2006, and merged back with Viacom in 2019 to form Paramount Global.
CBS certificates from the network television era attract collectors drawn to both broadcast history and the Paley legacy. The name-change stamp on this example gives it a documentary quality that clean examples lack, placing it at a specific turning point in the company's corporate evolution.
