This is an original stock certificate from Forest City and Gettysburg Railroad Company, dated 1900, printed in forest green.

The central vignette depicts three allegorical figures: a seated female at center with one arm raised, flanked by two male figures, all set against radiating sunburst lines with a faint industrial structure visible behind them. Floral elements frame the vignette on either side. A vertical banner in the left margin reads "Full Paid and Non-Assessable." An embossed corporate seal is present in the lower left. Printed by The Brown-Green Co. of New York.

Cancelled with punch holes. Offered as a collectible.

Potter County, South Dakota, in 1900 was an agricultural frontier still feeling the aftershocks of the Panic of 1893, a drought cycle that had collapsed land prices across the Dakotas, and the slow withdrawal of federal homestead enthusiasm. Into that landscape, the Forest City and Gettysburg Railroad Company was incorporated under South Dakota law to connect two small Potter County communities: Forest City, a fading Missouri River town, and Gettysburg, the county seat roughly thirty miles to the east. Short-line railroads like this one were the economic lifeline of the northern plains interior, moving grain, cattle, and coal to interchange points on the main lines of the Chicago and North Western or the Milwaukee Road. The total capitalization of $100 per share across a ten-share certificate reflects the community-scale funding model of these ventures: local merchants, farmers, and boosters pooling modest capital to bring rail access to towns that would otherwise wither.

Most of these Dakota short-lines were absorbed, abandoned, or consolidated as the regional rail map rationalized itself in the first two decades of the twentieth century, and the Forest City and Gettysburg Railroad left little surviving documentation, making certificates from its 1900 issue genuinely uncommon.

Short-line railroad certificates from the Dakota Territory and early South Dakota statehood period draw consistent interest from collectors focused on plains history, the settlement era, and the forgotten branch lines that briefly connected remote communities to the national economy. The Brown-Green Co., operating from 48 State Street in New York, was a smaller commercial printer working in the bank note tradition, and its work here is solid: crisp engraved lettering, a well-executed allegorical vignette, and strong color that has held up over more than a century.
