In 1833, Amos Lockwood established what would become one of America's premier textile mill engineering firms in Providence, Rhode Island. The company, later known as Lockwood, Greene & Co., built its reputation designing and constructing cotton mills throughout the South during Reconstruction, helping establish the region's textile industry. By the early 20th century, the firm had evolved into a major industrial engineering company under the leadership of Stuart W. Cramer, who coined the term "air conditioning" and revolutionized mill ventilation systems. The company designed hundreds of textile mills from Massachusetts to Georgia, including major installations for Cone Mills and Burlington Mills. During the Great Depression, when this bond was issued, Lockwood Greene was diversifying beyond textiles into general industrial construction, a strategy that helped the firm survive while many specialized textile engineers failed.
Industrial engineering bonds from the 1930s represent a fascinating intersection of American manufacturing history and financial survival during the Great Depression. This Lockwood Greene piece captures both the company's textile mill heritage and its strategic pivot during challenging economic times. Offered as a collectible.
