This is a $1,000 First and Refunding Mortgage Bond certificate from the Reading Company, issued in 1945. Printed in orange by the American Bank Note Company, it features a detailed vignette of a steam locomotive flanked by allegorical figures representing industry and commerce. The certificate includes a mostly full sheet coupons, some of which may have been clipped, and cancellation holes are present.
The Reading Company, originally established as the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad in 1833, was a major player in the transportation of anthracite coal and freight across the northeastern United States. By the mid-20th century, it had become one of the most prominent railroads in the region. However, due to financial difficulties and declining coal demand, the company filed for bankruptcy in 1971 and was later absorbed into Conrail in 1976.
