This is an original stock certificate from The Rock Island Company, dated 1914, printed in red. The central vignette depicts a steam locomotive head-on at a busy urban depot, smoke billowing above the engine while passengers and porters in period dress crowd the platform with luggage and hand carts; and a tall multi-story office building rises at right. Printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York.
The certificate shows light toning and an age patina consistent with its years, along with scattered foxing spots and a pencil notation at the top margin. A red revenue stamp is visible on the face. Cancelled with punch holes along the right edge. Offered as a collectible.
By July 1914, the Rock Island was one of the most discussed railroad names in America, and not entirely for good reasons. The Rock Island Company was the New Jersey-incorporated holding company created in 1902 to consolidate control of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, a system whose origins stretched back to 1847 and whose tracks eventually reached from Chicago to the Gulf of Mexico and from Memphis to the foothills of the Rockies. The holding company structure was architected largely by William H. Moore and his brother James H. Moore, the same Chicago promoters who assembled U.S. Steel alongside J.P. Morgan and who saw the Rock Island as a chance to replicate that kind of financial consolidation in railroads. Their reorganization loaded the system with debt, triggered early credit concerns, and set the stage for the financial instability that would haunt the railroad for the rest of its existence. The underlying railroad nonetheless operated a genuine and sprawling network, and the certificate was issued in the middle of a period when the Rock Island was fighting to rationalize its finances before the pressures of World War One reshaped American transportation entirely. The system survived multiple reorganizations across the twentieth century before collapsing in one of the largest railroad bankruptcies in American history, with formal liquidation completed in 1980 after more than 130 years of operation.
Certificates from the pre-World War One Rock Island holding company are a direct artifact of the Gilded Age financial engineering that shaped American railroads, printed by the American Bank Note Company, whose engraving work remains a benchmark for collectors of scripophily from this era.
