This is an original Gold Bond from The United States of America, dated 1918, callable in 1927. This Second Liberty Loan Converted 4¼% Gold Bond is printed on cream paper in orange and black ink with a $50 denomination. Features a central vignette of Thomas Jefferson, surrounded by elaborate scrollwork and borders.
You will receive a the exact certificate shown. This bond retains most of the attached interest coupons and shows age-appropriate wear that adds authentic character to this nearly century-old government security.
Liberty Bonds were created under the direction of Treasury Secretary William Gibbs McAdoo, whose facsimile signature appears on this certificate. McAdoo, who served under President Wilson and later became his son-in-law, orchestrated one of the largest public financing campaigns in American history to fund World War I. The Liberty Bond drives raised over $17 billion through four major issues between 1917-1918, with this Second Liberty Loan alone raising $3.8 billion from millions of American investors. McAdoo's innovative marketing campaign featured celebrities like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford, turning bond ownership into a patriotic duty with the slogan "Liberty Bonds or German Bondage."
This particular certificate represents the converted version issued in 1927, when original shorter-term Liberty Bonds were exchanged for longer-maturity gold bonds as part of Treasury debt management during the prosperous 1920s.
Liberty Bonds represent one of the most significant chapters in American financial history, when ordinary citizens funded democracy's victory in World War 1. These bonds remain highly sought after by collectors of Americana and government securities, representing both the home front war effort and the birth of modern mass market investing. Offered as a collectible.
