This is an original bond from the Village of Edgewater, dated 1875. Printed in black ink, the design is typographic with signatures from the president and clerk. The bond shows its age with some discoloration and staining, and includes cancellation markings consisting of multiple punch holes through the center and right side, indicating it was properly redeemed upon maturity.

The village issued this bond during the era when local governments across New York were scrambling to finance basic infrastructure — roads, water systems, and public buildings — as rural communities transformed into suburban townships. Frederick Law Olmsted, the renowned landscape architect who designed Central Park, was simultaneously working on plans for Staten Island's park system during this period, reflecting the island's transition from farmland to developed community. The Village of Edgewater eventually merged with neighboring communities to form larger municipal entities as Staten Island consolidated its scattered villages into more efficient governmental structures.
