This is an original bond from the Western Maryland Rail Road Company, printed in dark green ink. Features a vignette of a steam locomotive with passenger cars traveling through countryside landscape. The design includes an ornate geometric border with repeating circular medallions and decorative corner elements.

Founded in 1852, the Western Maryland Railway was the ambitious dream of Baltimore merchants seeking to break the Pennsylvania Railroad's stranglehold on coal traffic from the Cumberland region. The railroad's driving force was John Work Garrett, who later became president of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and financier William T. Walters, whose fortune would eventually fund the renowned Walters Art Museum. The Western Maryland carved a spectacular route through the Appalachian Mountains, becoming famous for its engineering marvels including the towering Thomas Viaduct and the challenging grades through the Allegheny range. Despite chronic financial struggles and multiple reorganizations, the railroad survived until 1983 when it was absorbed into the Chessie System, marking the end of more than a century of independent Maryland railroading.
Railroad bonds from the post-Civil War expansion era remain highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance and elegant engraved designs. Offered as a collectible.
